Our endeavour as School Counsellors is largely to promote mental health and raise awareness among our community, and we love it when local agencies get on board as well in helping us disseminate reliable and current information. Burwood Council has just released a series of podcasts presented by representatives from a number of different mental health organisations, all recorded live from Mental Health Month in October, 2017, including:
● ‘What is Anxiety?’, presented by Rebecca Somervaille, Rivendell Child, Adolescent, and Family Mental Health Service;
● ‘A Lived Experience’, presented by Jessica Herkes, BeyondBlue;
● ‘Parent Modelling’, presented by Danielle Pretty, COPMI (Children of Parents with a Mental Illness);
● ‘Raising kids that cope’, presented by Kylie Warry, The Resilience Centre;
● ‘Supporting your teens & difficult conversations (13+)’, presented by Vanessa Rebello Lyndall Power, Headspace & Raps;
● ‘Practical strategies to reduce anxiety in young children or children with additional needs’, presented by Sophia Anderson, Lifestart.
● ‘Building Resilient Teens: Breaking the Cycle of Anxiety, presented by Kylie Warry, The Resilience Centre.
These podcasts are targeted at parents of children with anxiety aged 3-18 years, School Counsellors (we will be listening, too!), and child/youth/family service providers, including information about supportive parenting, anxiety and mental health, local referral pathways, support services available, and current information and online resources.
We are very excited about this project, especially due to the fact it is a great platform for us to provide you with information that is relevant to you and that comes from reputable mental health organisations. There are a lot of podcasts out there on how to overcome anxiety, and while the messages can be positive, we sometimes question their validity. Having worked with the mental health providers listed above and having listened to segments of the podcasts, we trust the validity of the information included in the series. We will be listening to the podcasts over the next term in more depth and will provide you with feedback on the main points as we progress through the series. However, we strongly encourage you to beat us to the punch and listen to your heart’s content!

Until next time,
Alessandro.
